As a highly sensitive and intercultural person, I believe in the good in cultures and people. Highly sensitive people pick up many vibes from the environment, all the good as well as the bad going on in the world around us.
Sometimes the brain often can not distinguish between sensory impressions that have happened in the past and those that are happening now.
Another difficulty can be distinguishing the belonging of emotions; Which emotion is mine? Which emotion belongs to the other?
In Social Work, Counselling, and other People Helping professions, we make connections with people. We use our five senses and emotions to be aware of people and the environment.
The inside of a person is the same anywhere in this world. We can call the inside of a person the heart or soul. Physical appearance and cultural norms can differ, but highly sensitive people can be found anywhere in this world, because on the inside we are all the same - we have the same 5 senses, a heart and a soul.
'Intercultural Trauma Pedagogy with Heart&Art' advocates for those who are complex traumatised. Complex trauma usually occurrs in the caregiving relationship during childhood and is of an ongoing nature. The brain remembers such trauma as sensory experiences, the sounds, smells, looks, tastes and touch.
The highly sensitive person has a gift that can often hear, see, taste, touch, smell and perceive what is hidden and unspeakable in others.
We have a valuable treasure !
Every treasure needs to be protected through Self care !
Do I give to myself what I give to others ? Do I love myself, as much as I love others ?
I believe we can learn a lot from different cultures of this world, on how to feed and protect our treasure through intercultural Self care !
For example, you can get Out-of-the-Box Self care by stepping into the intercultural world:
Dance and music (the sense of touch and hearing for relaxing) from the Latino world
The variety of food (the sense of tasting and smelling for enjoyment) from the Asian world
How about Africa, the Middle East, and all the other regions of the world? What can we learn from them that gives us Out-of-the-Box Self care ?
